2020 Recent Events
Happy Holidays from the HPL
The first Sunday in December is always reserved for the Hopewell Public Library’s Annual Holiday Open House. It’s one of our favorite events as we get to visit with our friends in the community, share cookies and hot cider, and thank you for your support and patronage.
But 2020 has been an unusual and trying year. Never would an open house be more appreciated, it’s just not the right time. So, instead we are sending you our special holiday thanks in this original artwork from our local author and artist, Barbara DiLorenzo. Her work conveys joy, community and most of all, hope—all things we are wishing you for the season and the coming year. As you prepare for the holidays, we invite you to come by and view our Gift Giving Recommendations. (All titles are available in bookstores, and our friends at the Book & Bear will special order them for you.) Be sure to check out the 1,000 new E-books we’ve added to our digital resources. And not to be missed is our Ugly Sweater Contest on Facebook! With warmest wishes for happiness and good health this Holiday Season! - Anne, Arnold, Elaine, Jennifer, Connie and Norm |

Summer Programs at the HPL
July & August 2020 - Curbside Pickup - Summer Reading for Children - Imagine Your Story - Children's Quest Hunt Curbside pickup for books, DVDs, and audio CDs at the Hopewell Public Library has been up and running for the past few weeks. We are thrilled to be back in contact with our patrons, and to see all of those smiles (even from behind masks!). The summer reading program, IMAGINE YOUR STORY, has started for children. The children’s program this year includes a fantastic Quest to search for imaginary creatures throughout the borough. For curbside pickup, Library patrons are able to request an item through the Holds system on the HPL website, or by calling the library for help. When requested items are ready, the patron is contacted and scheduled for a Tuesday or Saturday pickup between 12:00pm and 2:00pm. InterLibrary Loan services have not yet resumed, and the library building remains closed to the public at this time. Pre-closure items should be returned to the library Drop Boxes by July 15th when the regular fee schedule will restart. Check the website for details about how to get a HPL library card if needed. The summer reading for children is under way, but there is still time to sign up for the program by calling the library for details. Children choose their own personal goal of how many books they can read during the summer. This year, the HPL is fortunate to have local author and illustrator, Barbara DiLorenzo, as a collaborator for a children’s Quest! Ms. DiLorenzo (barbaradilorenzo.com) has created poetic clues for our Quest hunt, and has painted magical, mythical, imaginary creatures to be found hiding here and there in the Hopewell community. There will be a total of seven creatures to find - with a new clue each week. Three hunters who complete the Quest and are able to find all of the creatures will win a gift certificate to The Bear and the Books!
More information and full details for curbside pickup and the children’s summer program can be found on the library’s website (redlibrary.org). And keep an eye on HPL Facebook posts (Hopewell Public Library NJ). Feel free to contact the library with any questions (609-466-1625). Staffing is still limited, but we will get back to you as soon as we can. Hopewell Public Library, 13 E. Broad St., Hopewell NJ 08525. |

HPL "Wednesday Night Out" Lecture Series -- March
Landscaping with Native Plants Wednesday, March 4, 7 pm -- at the #Hopewell Train Station# 2 Railroad Place, Hopewell NJ Free and open to the public You can transform your property into a garden that is beautiful, supports our pollinators with food and habitat, and that requires less maintenance by using perennial native flowers, bushes, ground covers, and trees. Learn more about how to create beautiful native garden habitats of any size. It is the vast and quickly diminishing community of native pollinators of bees, birds, butterflies, beetles, flies, and small mammals that work together to supply 85% of the main global crops that feed people --- fruits, vegetables, seeds, nuts, and oils. This hardworking group also is responsible for being the food for many other animals, besides us, in the ecosystem. You can still have some lawn but implement better practices for it. You can still have some of your favorite annuals --- just not the ones that jump into our forest and choke out the diversity of growth that is necessary for a healthy ecosystem. Judith K. Robinson began growing food organically and that led to the study of the importance of providing habitats and nutritional support for native pollinators. Her business creates designs for all sizes of native plant gardens. She also teaches Native Plant Garden Design at Mercer County Community College and at the Princeton Adult School, and delivers workshops to businesses, organizations, libraries, and schools. In 2009 she co-founded the flourishing Princeton Farmers' Market. Certified in Organic Land Use by Northeast Organic Farming Associations of New York & Connecticut, her training includes the Rodale Institute, Native Plant Society of New Jersey, Stockton College, Xerces Society, FOHVOS, Sourland Conservancy, Bowman’s Hill Wildflower Preserve, and Duke Farms. HPL "Wednesday Night Out" Lecture Series -- January
NON-PARTISAN INTRODUCTION TO CLIMATE CHANGE Wednesday, January 8, 7 pm -- at the Hopewell Theater 5 S. Greenwood Ave., Hopewell NJ Free and open to the public It’s Time to Get Serious! NO HYPE. JUST FACTS. A NON-PARTISAN, DIFFERENT KIND OF TALK ON CLIMATE CHANGE. Most Americans across party lines recognize climate change is happening, but many don’t know how it will impact them directly and whether there is urgency to address it. On Wednesday, January 8, 2020 at 7 pm at the Hopewell Theater, Hopewell Public Library will present the C-Change Primer, a different kind of talk about climate change. The Primer focuses on facts from trusted sources. On actual and perceived risks. On human issues, not political ones. Kathleen Biggins, founder of C-Change Conversations, a Princeton-based nonprofit organization, developed the Primer in consultation with independent climate scientists and public policy specialists. The Primer has been endorsed by moderate and conservative business, political, and social leaders and enthusiastically received by audiences of more than 7,500 people in 28 states. The organization is comprised of business, legal, media, and medical professionals, including Sophie Glovier, who will present the Primer. Sophie works with nonprofits, early-stage companies, and local government to create a more sustainable society. She is a graduate of Princeton University and Columbia Business School. The Primer presents clear, unbiased information that helps people understand how climate change will affect them personally, with an emphasis on how our changing environment is affecting our health, national security and the global economy. It answers many of the questions most Americans have about climate change, such as: How do we know climate change is real and is caused by humans? What is the scientific consensus? What are the dangers? Is there hope? Bring a friend and receive a free Hopewell Theater movie pass. (Offer not valid for family members.) Learn more about The Primer and the C-Change Conversations Lecture Series at www.c-changeconversations.org. |
